You might be under the impression that all fats are bad for your health, but the fact is, dietary fat is an essential nutrient that our bodies need to function properly.
It helps the body to grow, repair and develop, and maintains cell membranes. Fat is also vital for hormone production and balance, and helps in the absorption of vitamins. In fact, your brain is made up of 60% fat, which is why consuming good fats is essential for good health (and fending off dementia, among other things!).
So, why is good fat important for you? Firstly, fat doesn't make you fat! Contrary to popular belief, dietary fat doesn't contribute to fat within your body. In fact, good fats such as those found in avocado, nuts, and oily fish, can actually help you lose weight by keeping you full for longer, and ultimately stopping you from snacking and eating more.
Secondly, fat takes longer to digest than protein and carbs, keeping you filled up for longer, and reducing the spike in blood sugar in your body when you eat. This is important because a spike in blood sugar can result in a series of negative health outcomes.
Consuming good fats can help get rid of visceral fat, which is the dangerous fat around your middle. Omega-3 fats, which are found in fish, nuts and seeds, are particularly good for this. It's recommended that our diet should consist of 35% fat in order to maintain optimum health. So, include good fats in your diet, such as those found in avocados, nuts, oily fish, and seeds, and reap the benefits of good health!
